After signing a contract for more than $1.5 million per year to manage and perform in a new theatre carrying his name at the Carolina Crossroads entertainment and retail complex in 2007, Parton began touring the country. Because of the theater’s inability to draw in patrons, and because of concerns raised about Parton’s use of a nearly $3 million fund for personal travel and pleasure, the relationship between Parton and the city deteriorated further. Parton was reportedly questioned by city officials about illegal activities that took place inside the theatre, including a wedding celebration for his daughter, as well as about who would be promoting the theatre, according to reports. Throughout the dispute, Parton insisted that his actions were within the scope of the contract and that the theatre would be successful given enough time to succeed. On January 8, 2008, Dolly Parton’s contract with the city was cancelled, and the theatre was renamed the Roanoke Rapids Theater in her honour.
